One Paragraph Movie Review: Breaking Away
Sixtieth film: Breaking Away, from 1979. Okay, so I just enjoyed a film about cycling. The main character, played by Dennis Christopher who is probably actually Beck, is an Italianophile and cycling-obsessed teenager who rises above his quarry-cutter roots to show them uppity college kids what’s what. Co-starring Dennis Quaid and his comely youthful six-pack, this is a non-cringey coming-of-age working class struggle that actually makes you want to ride a bike and swim in a perfectly rectangular waterhole. If you don’t count the classic, hard-worn working class and identity crisis themes, there’s not a lot to this movie, which is what makes it pretty bloody good. Three and three-quarter pretty bloody knees out of five.
