One Paragraph Movie Review: Cidade De Deus/City of God

Eightieth film: Cidade De Deus, which is Portuguese for ‘City of God’, a Brazilian film that everyone I spoke to had seen except me. IT’S SO GOOD. Set in a slum in Brazil and following a number of pivotal characters involved in a sliding scale of wanting-to-make-a-go-of-it to gang warfare, it’s unbelievable how many different things this film is. Funny, horrifying, sweaty, violent, and cool, it’s like Goodfellas mixed with rum, lime, and nine thousand pairs of shorts. LOVED it, in a good-to-watch but not fun-to-watch way. Four foreboding escaped chickens out of five.
