Fifty-first film: Das Boot, which is German for both ‘The Boat’ and ‘Tin Can Full O’ Spunks’. This is a very long film that is utterly gripping the whole way through, no mean feat for a story about a bunch of blokes in a submarine at the turning point of World War II.
From the opening vomit-drenched bar scene to a number of claustrophobic, ruggedly masculine bits where you’re sure you’re about to watch men die as soon as they’ve finished tinkering with their tools, there’s very little relaxing to be had, but loads and loads of bananas.
This is not a good time, but hot damn it’s an incredible one with beards on it. Four and three-quarter tugboat herring salads out of five.
