One hundred and forty-second film: Fat City. Fat City is a boxing movie. I know that somewhere deep inside I have the ability to enjoy a boxing movie, but Fat City is designed to be depressing. It starts with a boxing has-been who swings between drinking heavily and giving up, and progresses swiftly towards a promising young boxer — a tiny baby Jeff Bridges in tiny baby shorts — who figures he’ll save himself the trouble of a career and just give up now. This is a movie about squirting your potential down the toilet and split eyebrows, and both look pretty uncomfortable. Watch it if you’re trying to warn yourself off drinking. Or boxing. Or having a nice time. One angry steak dinner out of five.
