One hundred and seventy-third film: Gertrud, a slow-moving Danish film from 1964. In a plot nutshell, this is a movie that takes two hours to tell a ten-minute story about a woman who keeps breaking up with men because they put their work first, yet she seems drawn to successful men. In a less charitable nutshell this thumping tonne of drear is a movie about people staring into the middle distance, talking bollocks. The only good thing about my experience watching Gertrud was that the English subtitles contained numerous errors, so my feeling of watching a grey, damp tea towel drag itself to its own death was relieved more than once by the word “bum” printed on the screen. Nope. One silhouetted blouse-removal out of five.
