One Paragraph Movie Review: Glory
One hundred and eighty-fourth film: Glory, a civil war film starring Matthew Broderick in which he definitely does not get the day off. Look, war is stupid and violent and macho, so war films are often at least violent and macho, but this is such a great telling of a previously-overlooked bit of history — the first African-American regiment to fight in the American Civil War — that I’ll accept the violence and machismo and complete lack of any substantial female roles. I won’t overlook Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman and the incredible supporting cast though, because they made me cheer and cry and feel things, but I’m doing absolutely everything I can to overlook Matthew Broderick’s wispy 1800s facial hair, which is just about the most distracting piece of fuzz I’ve seen on screen, and I’m old enough to have seen Alf. War is still pretty stupid, though. Four pairs of overdue shoes out of five.
