One Paragraph Movie Review: Heavenly Creatures
Two hundred and twenty-fourth movie: Heavenly Creatures, Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey’s acting debut in a Peter Jackson film based on a real life 1953 murder committed by teenagers Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme. This is an almost perfect true crime-embellishment movie, stunningly acted and directed, and sploshed liberally with fantastic and disturbing imagined elements illustrating Pauline and Juliet’s spiralling fantasy world. Add utterly believable dropped-in-the-middle-of-it props and sets, wonderful costuming and — icing on any pop culture cake — a New Zealand accent, and you’re on a winner. A shocking, true, uncomfortable winner. Yep. Four and three quarter bricks in stockings out of five.
