Twenty-Eighth film: The Band Wagon, a 1953 Fred Astaire/Cyd Charisse musical. Musicals aren’t my favourite, and I’ll only tolerate cheesy Technicolour jazz musicals if there’s some good hoofin’ in them, so YAY Cyd Charisse. I’ve never warmed to Astaire, though, and I don’t know if it’s the boater hats, the persistently oversized suits, or the exaggerated swagger gait. You got famous wearing jazz shoes mate, dial down the pimp attitude a notch. This is a crossover style fusion musical about a crossover style fusion musical — up its own arse a bit, but it’ll do. Two and a half Faustian descents into hell out of five.
