One hundred and eighty-fifth film: The Godfather. This is the first time I’ve ever watched this movie, and now I’m extremely cross with myself for delaying this amount of pleasure for this long. I don’t know what I was thinking — I LOVE gangster movies, clever violence, young Al Pacino’s divine face, sprawling sets, pasta, and wine. This perfect familial odyssey has everything, PLUS a cat. And I guess a horse, but not for very long. It’s so easy to understand how a brutal criminal organisation can plot, scheme, undermine and murder when it’s plonked so deftly in the context of family, from a wedding to a cacciatore dinner to an old man dying amongst his tomato plants. I raced from closing credits to Googling reviews which uncovered clever plot points I hadn’t even noticed, which means now I want to watch it all over again, and will do so when I have another three goddamn hours spare. Si. Si very much. Five mucky satin bed sheets out of five.
