Ninety-ninth film: Der Himmel Uber Berlin, which in English is ‘The Sky Over Berlin’, but as a subtitled movie is ‘Wings of Desire’, presumably because 1987 English-speaking Westerners respond way better to the idea of desire than the idea of Berlin. I told this movie to hurry up a LOT, although I didn’t tell it it was stupid like the Meg Ryan/Nicolas Cage remake City of Angels, so I guess that’s a plus. It takes itself extremely seriously, unsurprising for a film that makes the Berlin Wall and Nick Cave two of its primary symbols. This thing is not my cup of tea but has recognisable merit, and although I was absolutely not expecting Peter Falk to be playing himself in it (“ist nicht das Columbo?”) I am unsurprised that I absolutely want to be a trapeze artist now. Still. Meh. Two extremely good libraries out of five.
